homegrown garden and wild flowers for weddings in Cheshire

This has been a winner for me this year. Rudbeckia triloba. I’ve grown the lovely orange Prairie Glow for many years, but not tried the straight original yellow species. It’s a bit bigger and rangier, but I love it. Proper yellow, but somehow softened by the almost dainty flowers and wiry, loose growth habit. I wonder how they would dry? I need to mark some to keep for seed though, before I cut them all.

A sense of place....We have been at @goodlifeexperience festival at Hawarden Castle this weekend. We walked up to the old castle ruin to see the view. It’s part of a series of 13th Century castles built along the Welsh border. They were often built in sight-line of each other - looking across the Cheshire plain here, you can see the isolated hill of another, Beeston Castle, on the horizon. I worked on the archaeological excavations there all through the holidays of my teenage and university years. To the far right are the gentle Sandstone hills where I grew up and further right, where we now live and grow our flowers.
In the middle distance is the British Aerospace factory, built in the Second World War and where they now make the wings for the Airbus. I was shown around this amazing factory in an earlier working life when I freelanced in HR and recruitment.
In the foreground is the scatter of tents and tipis of the festival - music, laughter, shouting children and barking dogs drifting up to the ancient castle walls. Time for more beer and food, I think?!

Dusky pinks and lilacs for Rosie. And a couple of Acidanthera for a touch of glamour and that swooning scent. All grown by me, they’ve gone off to deepest Wales along with a car full of bouquets, buttonholes and buckets of flowers from here and that her mum has collected up from gardens where she works. I think the sun will be shining for them ✨☀️

Rudbeckias and Borlotti beans. The backbone of early autumn. Along with blackberries, chrysanths and ripening squash. Misted windows and dew on the skylight. Chopped logs and seed orders. But the routines are familiar - this morning, I’m doing the finishing details for a dusky autumnal buckets/bouquets/buttonholes wedding to be collected and taken off into rural wales for tomorrow, while Paul is delivering flowers up into Wirral for an event in Liverpool this evening. Then some time off at @goodlifeexperience over the weekend.

Flowers can be too tasteful sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, I love soft, pale colours as much as anyone, just not all the time. These eye-warming Tagetes can’t really be described as tasteful but they’re certainly exciting and somehow full of energy and joy. How do they do that? I’d love someone to do a PhD on the emotions that different flowers inspire, if they haven’t already?!

In this day-long workshop, on Sept 17th, we will look at how you can add individuality, character and value to your designs by using home grown material. Cutting flowers on a beautiful sunny, still Sunday. Today, on the other hand, is wet and windy. A good day to be going to meet up with lots of other flowers growers at @justdahlias. I suspect more time will be spent chatting and eating cake inside than outside looking at dahlias?! But we will definitely get out there, whatever the weather, to check out Philippa’s fabulous dahlia field. We’re all members of the North West region of @flowersfromthefarm, such a lovely group of positive people and amazing support network.
And in case you’re thinking that some of these flowers are already blown, I had better explain. I’ve picked them at the stage that I know this designer likes them, ready to look how she wants for tomorrow. Not to last a week in a vase 😳 It’s all about knowing what your customer wants.
